What the sealer does
On stamped concrete, the sealer locks in the release color that makes the pattern read, slows water and oil from sitting in the texture, and gives you a film you can renew. It is not a structural coat. It does not stop a crack that the slab wants to make, and it does not glue a settling base back together.
Film-forming sealers are the ones that build a layer you can see, in gloss or matte. Penetrating sealers soak in and change the surface less. Stamped work usually wants a film-forming sealer so the color contrast stays. The wrong product, or a product applied over a dirty or damp slab, peels. Peeling is a sealer failure. It is not automatically a concrete failure. The repair page tells those apart.
[PARTNER: sealer products] and [PARTNER: warranty on workmanship and sealer] are unpublished. A brand name on this page would be an advertisement for a product this site has not been told it uses.
What happens if you don’t reseal
The surface goes chalky. The darker release in the joints of the pattern fades, so the stamp starts to look like a faint texture instead of stone. Stains from leaves, rust, and driveway oil set deeper. In a climate that does freeze, even a short one like Huntsville’s, water in that texture expands and the paste at the surface chips more easily when the sealer is gone.
None of that means the 4 inch slab is ruined. Many faded patios are candidates for a clean and a reseal, not a tear-out. If the concrete is flaking down through the paste, or the crack has a vertical offset you can trip on, sealing over it hides the problem for a season. Look at the damage with the contractor before you pay for a coat.
A common reseal interval in the trade is every 2 to 3 years. Driveways and pool decks in full sun are often sooner. Shaded patios last longer on the film. That is a common range, not a promise. [PARTNER: reseal interval] is the interval a contractor will put on their own work.
The downside of sealing
Sealer can be slippery, especially gloss, especially when wet. Pool decks and sloped walks need a non-slip additive or a lower sheen. Sealer applied too heavy can blush white or trap moisture. Sealer applied over an old incompatible coat can peel in sheets. Those are real downsides. They are reasons to specify the product and the prep, not reasons to leave stamped concrete raw if you want the color to last.
Pets, grills, and planters that stay on the slab during application will leave squares of unsealed concrete or, worse, get sealed to the patio. Move them. Cars stay off a driveway until the label says the film can take tires. Hot tires soften some sealers. [PARTNER: stay-off times] should mention tires specifically.
Best time of year in North Alabama
The slab has to be dry through the texture, not just dry to a hand on the high spots. After a week of Huntsville rain, a stamp can hold damp in the joints while the surface looks pale. Sealing that traps moisture. Spring and fall give milder temperatures and, often, a clearer forecast. Summer pours of sealer can work early in the day if the concrete is not hot and storms are not building. Winter works on a dry, mild stretch. The label’s minimum temperature is the limit, including overnight if the cure is still going.
[PARTNER: weather policy] is the crew’s rule for calling off a seal day. A webpage should not tell you to coat a patio at noon in August because the calendar said spring is better and you are impatient.
Prep is the job
A reseal without cleaning is a coat on dirt. Dirt, algae in shaded Hampton Cove corners, and failed old sealer have to come off. Pressure washing can do that and can also etch the cream of the concrete if the tip is too close and the pressure is too high. PSI guidance is [PARTNER: pressure guidance]. This page will not invent a PSI number. If you wash it yourself, use a fan tip, stay back, and expect to reseal afterward if the surface looks newly dull. The question “is it okay to pressure wash stamped concrete” is answered: carefully, yes; aggressively, no.
Cracks that are moving should be discussed before they are smeared with filler and coated. A flexible joint treatment and a rigid patch are different tools. [PARTNER: crack treatment before sealing] is the method. Then the coats go on at the spread rate the manufacturer prints, which is how you avoid a skin that peels because it was poured on too thick.
The cost guide explains why a national patio average is not this invoice. Put the approximate area and whether the old sealer is peeling into the estimate form.
Questions on this page
What happens if you don't reseal stamped concrete?
The release color wears off, the surface stains more easily, and water sits in the texture. The slab can still be structurally fine when it looks faded. Huntsville's occasional freezes are harder on a worn surface than on a sealed one.
What is the average cost to seal concrete?
A local price per square foot is not published. Cleaning, crack repair, and the number of coats change the job. The national stamped-patio project average is not a sealing price.
What is the best time of year to seal concrete?
When the slab is dry and the forecast gives the sealer time to cure. In North Alabama that is often spring or fall. Summer can work if the concrete is not hot and rain is not close. The product label sets the temperature window.
